OK...I have a client that wants to update a portion of his site daily. (I told him I would do it, but he insists he does it)

The site is in html.

I can have him go in with a text editor and edit the text that is within the code ofthe site. (I can put some hidden tags so he knows exactly where and where not to edit)

I just have concerns of the damage he can do in the code...

Is there a program out there that anyone knows of that they can edit and the site would pick up their changes? I was thinking maybe there is a widget out there....or does twitter or something like that do that?? (never used twitter so I have no clue about it)

Thanks for any help

Basically it is just a box that has text of his upcoming schedule in it.

Depends on the amount of text and any formatting he would need. You could wire it up to a text file or maybe even a mysql or sqlite database and only give him access to update either of those. Then give him a page where he can update the text and include some basic formatting (bold, indent, color, etc...) and if any attempt to inject code is attempted, it would be treated as text.

I would do what Bubba suggested.

To update the text either:
( 1 ) Let him update the text file and FTP it
( 2 ) Provide an "update" page where he can just type in a text box and write to a text file using a script.

To display the text on the page either:
( 1 ) Use a script to read the file and merge with the HTML stream
( 2 ) Use some sort of INCLUDE command

This is not an uncommon function, so you should be able to find some pre-packaged solutions, scripts, etc. It will all depend on what capabilities your server has (ASP? JSP?)

- original webpage that display's the text of his upcoming schedule: put a hyperlink on it, eg. 'upcoming schedule'
- link that hyperlink to a location containing a document (word, pdf, pic,...)
- allow your client to put the document on that location (overwrite existing one eg., or allow adding docs but then you need logic to link to newest doc)
- how to allow him to put it there: ftp, or by having small appl to create doc and put it there (similar to bubba & general's explanation)

Here is a link to a very simple example that uses the general concept. This is for servers running active server pages (i.e. MS IIS)

http://www.asp101.com/samples/textfile.asp

Here are a few more examples of reading and displaying the contents of a text file, as well as writing the contents of a text box (e.g. web form) to a text file.

http://www.w3schools.com/asp/asp_ref_textstream.asp

Basically you would give him a form that allows him to type the text, write the contents to a text file and then read and display that file within your page.

The only thing I might suggest (I am not a programmer) is that you do a daily save of the site with a date in the folder so that if he does screw it up, you can go back to a point previous to his meddling.

Did you get a chance to view my homestead page, **DRC**Sipp?

I'd like to get your opinion on it.
I pay under 4 bucks a month. Not a lot of bells and whistles, but I need it for my job search, and I respect your opinion.

Thanks
